font-family: times new roman;">Let’s analyze what our great April movement was. Let’s get into the facts first:
What is Nepal ’s population? 28,901,790
What is Kathmandu ’s population? 800000
Where was the demonstration primarily? Kathmandu
Why was there a demonstration?

I use the term “Monopolization of Government”. Do you think the wish of 800,000 people is the same as 28,901,790? What made you think everyone wants the same as Katmandu wants? Even if we consider the cities like Nepalgunj, Biratnager, Butwal, the number cannot exceed 900,000 who participated in the April movement. Now, was it voluntary? No. People were forced by the Maoists to join the street demonstration, and most of them were Maoists themselves. 2.42% of people is not a good number to prove that there was a revolution. What about the people from Rolpa, Dolpa, Mustang and many other remote places? Have you ever considered what they want? Just because they are honest and not violent does not mean that they have authorized you to lead their lives. The present government is for 900,000 people, not for 28,901,790.

How do you analyze "the Nepalese people can decide what they want"? On what grounds and facts do you claim what the wishes of Nepalese are? When was the last election held? When was the last time people voted for any of their rights? How can you confirm that the decision of Nepalese people are not the decisions of the power hungry leaders? Give me one good justification as to why I should not believe the word "people" has not been misused.
How do you know what Nepalese people want? Are you or the SPA the representative for the people? When did people elect you? Are you self proclaimed representative? Who gave you the right to make decisions on behalf of the people?
Let me ask you, why do you want CA? What does CA mean to you? What will CA do? Why was CA demanded? The basic purpose of CA is to declare Nepal republic so that Nepal can be raped by eight dictators until she dies. And, this is what we will witness if election is forced. CA will legalize terrorism and corruption. The precedent has been set by Home Minister Sitaula—the cousin of terrorist chief Prachanda—whose primary action was to launch state terrorism against Madhesis. What will make people support your SPA? To get exile once the country is republic. Imagine you being a citizen of a Communist country; we cannot be more ashamed if this happens. Monarchy is not an issue for the development of country. The history of economics proves that many countries in the world emerged as global powers under dictatorship. We were ruled by a mere symbolic King; advancement was questionable with the democracy of 90s.

Do you think CA will be free and fair? We are democratic, and in order to preserve democracy and avoid the SPA and Maoists dictatorship, we must need to boycott CA poll. I certainly do not want to vote for election that will legalize terrorism.

The bottom line is: Who wants CA? –only the people who were and remained unemployed when King’s rule was imposed. Besides, they did not have any alternatives to do since most of them are illiterate.

I invite everyone to join with me to create awareness in boycotting the CA election. Please do not ruin your and your coming generation’s future by voting the terrorists. Our vote will be a poison for us.

Home Minister Sitaula—A terrorist in the Government

After the forced April revolution, the old man Girijabhaiya appointed at his will Situala as the cabinet’s home minister. Many failed to realize who this person was. After joining the Government, his first initiative was to launch state terrorism against the Madhesis and the Royalists. He sponsored many riots in Nepal, in which the security forces openly scream (in the videos), to kill as many Madhesis possible. Many Madhesis have been killed so far. The key demand of the Madhesis to force him to resign for his inability to maintain law and order could not be heard by the old ears of Girija. If Madhesis claim that they have achieved anything from the April movement, this shame suffices that Madhesis are noting, and the Pahadi government will not listen to them. Girijabhaiya, a born Indian Bihari becomes PM unlimited times—a clear result of Monopoly over the government.

Why was Sitaula appointed in this key position? This position handles Army and the Security personnel. He is the cousin of the Terrorist Chief Prachanda. A deal was sealed between Prachanda and Girijabhaiya to appoint him as the minister. This formally gave the Terrorist chief power to legalize terrorism through Sitaula. Of course, this was a wrong move by Girijabhaiya.

Sitaula, as an absurd excuse to hide is impotence to maintain peace, usually blames either the Madhesis or the Royalists for any clashes, bombings, and riots. It appears, he was appointed by Girija just to terrorize Madhesis and serve in the interest of Maoists. Lets notice the language; Prachanda and Sitaula speak the same script. Now he is forcing Madhesis to participate in the election, otherwise Army can be mobilized. Since the State is acting on behalf of the terrorist, we Nepalese need to fight against terrorism.

Boycott CA Polls

Since the CA election is just a drama for SPA and the Maoists to legalize their illegal monopoly over the government and justify their terrorism, we should campaign and suggest everyone not to participate in the CA election. Rather, they will allow others to rule over them if they participate in this election.

The SPA Gathering

Who says Madhesis have democracy in Nepal? The recent gathering of the SPA organized event and the clashes between the police and the Madhesis reinforces the idea of “Rule of Pahades” in Nepal. The Madhesis have awakened; they have jointly formed groups to fight against the Pahade government’s aristocracy. In the present scenario, the terrorism is sponsored by the government of Nepal with the help of Maoists. They not only are willing to rule the Pahad but also want a grasp in the whole Terai. Analogously, I do not see it possible. There was a time when the Madhesis had learned to be ruled; however, the continuous suppression ignited the stimulus of Madhesis and they are demanding for their sovereignty—the Madhesi sovereignty. This is not a small step, instead it is challenging and we can see it from the past riots in which the government either terrorized Madhesis or sponsored the terrorism by acting as a mere spectator and supporting the Maoists.

The SPA and the Maoists are using their forces to maintain Peace in Terai. They should realize by now that peace in Madhes is not possible unless Madhes become free from the rule of Pahad. Let us distinguish, Madhesh and Pahad are different. There should not be intervention from Pahad in Madhesh. Even if the CA election is forced on them, I firmly believe that the result will be counter-productive for the people of Nepal en mass. Let it be a warning—the government cannot stop this revolution; this revolution is for the democracy for the people of Mahesh as opposed to the democracy of SPA. The SPA revolution was ignited to improve the self-status of the leaders; the people of Nepal remained in status-quo. Let Madhesis demand be fulfilled unless Nepal is on the verge of division, may it be from another uninvited civil war.

There is still time and I want to invite the Madhesis from all wings to join the revolution against the government. Past precedents have set that you are ruled only when you choose to be ruled.

Let me reconfirm, we are not against the Pahad or Pahades, we just need EQUAL rights, and this must come. Be it at the cost of Bimlendra Nidhi, Matrika Yadav or any Madhesi who do not want Madhesis to advance.

Nepal--A Republic? India's Conspiracy to Invade Nepal

I strongly condemn the violation of the constitution of Nepal that proposed Nepal to be declared a republic without the mandate of the people. This has yet again raped democracy in the name of democracy, and people of Nepal are instilling--representing the treacherous Nepali behavior towards their caretaker. Had there been no Mahendra, Nepal would have been a remote part of India or China. I know it is hard to make people understand but I feel pity for the poor Nepalese again, they are yet again deceived and the future is dark and shrinking. These leaders grew up in India, lived in India, were educated in India and are acting in the interest of India. Let us turn the page in our old history books, "Nepal dui dhunga ko tarul ho". For some illiterate, it does not mean anything, but for the literate, it means a lot. Mahendra preserved “Nepal”—the sovereignty of Nepal, when the octopus India swallowed Sikkim and the gigantic China inhaled Tibet. This deception of Nepalese for the king will lead Nepal to Dark Age. And again, “the people”, not the leaders will be the one who will be suffering. After the denial of the India’s proposal to shelter Nepal by King Mahendra, India turned enemy for King, and this is India’s conspiracy to invade Nepal, by use of its own citizens—Girija, Makune, Prachana and Babu. Let all Nepalese be on alert and open your eyes wide open to see India’s conspiracy.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ndforum.blogspot.com/2007/12/nepal-republic-indias-conspiracy-to.html' title='Nepal--A Republic? />October 12, 2007

A democratic political leader that still supports the institution of the monarchy in any form is a scandalous. It is only one nightmare that people had for centuries and still have against their liberty and rights. Possibly we cannot wipe out the history that how much suppressions this feudal institution had committed against people and democracy. Therefore, there is no basis to keep this institution and those who strive for it are unreasonably regressive.

There is no history if ever the monarchy had full heartedly committed to the democracy. If he had, could he have dissolved people’s Parliament time and again for his absolute power? If we cannot reason on this fact yet strive for his continuity for the sake of the legitimacy then there is something wrong with our thinking.

The political crisis that has come about with Maoists’ political proposals for declaring republic prior to the CA elections and adopting full proportional representation electoral system are thus historically and politically legitimate. But the proposals must be discussed and democratically resolved.
Maoists as democratically committed political party has right under the Article 159 (3) (a) of the Interim Constitution to submit a proposal in the House on declaring Nepal a republic state if the king is found to be disrupting the CA elections.
The interim government’s lack of action for the public security after April Uprising the unrest has increased drastically in Terai particularly. One of the reasons is the practice of impunity by the government. Moreover, the interim government does not have reliable intelligence gathering agency for the public security management. In fact, the most of public unrests took place due to the utter negligence of the local level security authorities. Why security forces are not taking responsibility has become the public doubt. The public unrest thus has made scheduled CA elections unsafe. UNHRC, Carter Center, NHRC and NEC have often been complaining about it.
Unless Maoists proposal on declaring Nepal a republic state is not politically resolved among SPA a new schedule for CA is not viable. NC’s stand on legitimacy that can only be achieved after the CA elections on the fate of the monarchy is historically disputable. After the people’s movements or revolutions in our neighboring counties India and China, for example, the CA elections did not occur to oust the British Empire and the Emperor of China. France and United States too did not go through it. But the political leaderships declared the republic. Legitimacy on declaring a state republic has been historically the political will of the political leaderships. The ambiguity of the political leaderships can only make such a declaration complicated.

The interim constitution has overruled its own provision with its second amendment on the fate of the monarchy that shall be decided after the first meeting of the CA electoral. On declaring republic under the Article 159 (3) (a) of the Interim Constitution as Maoists have purposed the best thing for NC is not to insist on CA provision but to find out about the ground reality and see how far it is politically feasible. Sticking to the earlier provision is the propensity of the status quo and that might cause a national disaster.

The unity of SPA and a new schedule of CA elections are the most immediate issues for the nation to have permanent peace and democracy. We can by no means risk this national interest for sake of the legitimacy on declaring republic. Our nightmare of the monarchy in fact has successfully been restrained by the dedication of the Nepal Army leaderships to the establishment of democracy. After all the dignity and richness of Nepal Army truly lies in the democracy. No longer Nepal Army can afford violating the human rights yet seek the dignity in the international communities.

If referendum is chosen, for instance, in order to resolve the demand of Maoists on declaring republic prior to CA elections, the referendum has to be occurred first. This might be time consuming and the nation has no time for establishing permanent peace and democracy. If we listen to the international communities’ message on the legitimacy of the interim government for that long period of time at this degree of national crises, the most viable chose for the nation is to declare republic from the Interim Parliament.
In fact, political leaderships should be more cautious with the sentiment of people more than with their own apprehension for the legitimacy. Maoists have committed to the multiparty democracy and they should be accountable to people and to the international communities. But if members of SPA mess up with their main two demands then that would be unfortunate. This is the message international communities are conveying to us.
The second Maoist demand for an amendment of Article 63 (3) of the Interim Constitution with the proportional representation electoral system in place of mixed electoral system must not be neglected. NC too must adopt PRES system but Open Listed PRES. Under OLPRES the list of party candidates will be published and voters will know whom they are voting for on the ballot. Under the Closed List PRES voters will not know to which individual candidates they are voting for, but they vote for the particular party list only. In multiparty democracy such CLPRES has become obsolete. If amendment is mandated by SPA and the Parliament then NC must purpose OLPRES.
Perhaps in the political history of Nepal Maoists are the ones who have taken the most risky and violent political path for a change that they have dreamed of. People and the nation have shared more loss than gain from their insurgency but we cannot afford such a risky adventure over again. NC leadership must understand this fact for the sake of the people more than their own political gain. This impasse is the last chance for Prime Minister and President of NC to find the safe passage out of it so that people will no more become the victims. NC must move forward with the national interest by letting the traditional values slip away from the political choices. In this difficult time legitimacy means political decisiveness to initiate people’s mandate for the fundamental changes that can give birth to a new democratic Nepal.

No Monarchy, No Nepal, No Madheshi

It appears that most Nepali Dailies and unpopular Indian newspapers are trying their best efforts to defame the institution of Monarchy, Hinduism, and Nationalism of Nepal. Finally, Krishna Prasad speaks for the Monarchy; at least I salute this old lion for being firm in his belief. I wonder how few Nepalese dream Prachandu to be the president of Nepal. I hope none of their relatives have been killed by this demon, instead, I suspect, they might have been associated in with this mass killer in some form. I am sympathetic to those who still support this killer who presents himself to the future potential leader. Everyone knows that Maoists and Democratic Allies are afraid to lose the election against the monarchy, and hence, they do not even let the influential people contest. Now, common Nepali Hindu are blamed to be “fundamentalist and extremist” by these newly emerging newspapers. India vests more interest in Nepal, than it does in its own failed nation. Kantipur is campaigning for Maoists. Great! This is what the newspaper of a democratic nation does. Kantipur states “Both Subedi and Prasain claimed that the eight-party alliance has no right to abolish the monarchy and declare Nepal a secular state.” Absolutely, eight dictators have no right to represent Nepal. I notice that after that April movement, people are blindly following Maoists, regardless of the parties they represent. Summing up, the coalition formed itself represents spreading disease of communism. I can just say, to achieve absolute democracy, right people should follow right step at the right time, and I am sure, nothing is right at this time. There won’t be democracy, if there is no monarchy. Imagine you being the cadre of Prachnadu. There won’t be Madheshi if there is no monarchy. From the time of my birth, I have seen suppression against Madhesis, and even today, Madhesis COULD NOT force this government to resign Krishna Situala. What can be more compelling shame for Madhesis to accept that there is no place for them in this coalition government? Once the power is transferred to these dictators, Madheis will be exterminated in Nepal. Madhesis still have time to rethink and follow a solid strategy to make their base strong rather than blindly following to what others say. Visionary will the one who will survive in the ling run. With unclear strategy, attempting to rule overnight, failing to unite, following others – the demise of solidifying madhesi power is certain in the time to come. No communist country has been stable, financially or politically. Nepal is already on its making to a dictatorship and communist country. News is everywhere and so are the opinions about it. Before I read the news, I wanted to see how far I am correct in my guesses about it. I knew people have gained expertise in solely one thing “Blame”; and this decade of blame from all sectors goes to the “powerless” King Gyanendra. My only question that arises “Isn’t it almost two years that the so called “democratic elites” are ruling the country?” And, I saw this change; Blasts. The Maoists have devastated Nepal, and still restructuring, but we “the democratic Nepalese” still think they are the revolutionists. Great! This view from the 90’s has emerged Nepal into global terrorism. The saddest irony, “democratic elites” consider this as democracy. If this is the truth, I believe, it is the urgency of time to change the meaning of democracy; we certainly would not like to hurt the feelings of Abraham Lincoln or Martin Luther King. Maybe the present day democracy of Nepal is following the path of dictatorship, and Maoism. It is now the demand of time for Nepalese to stop the blame game on King. I feel that people are tired to see this blame game. Prachnda wants to postpone the election, and why shouldn’t he? He is afraid to go back to jungle in his old age without the weapons and his army. Moreover, the blood sucker is getting old, the blood has frozen, and it is getting too late for his dream to be the First President of Nepal. Bhattarai, the frustrated failed person, does not realize what his demands are. Sometimes, I feel, Nepalese politics should be transferred to minor kids; at least they know what they are taking and asking, compared to these “defamed leaders”. Now, there we come--the Madhesis; what a mysterious ethnic tribe. I wonder if they will find what exactly they want. Civil liberty is a process, and Madhesis expect everything overnight. Sadly, Madhesh has not even been able to produce a good communicative leader. Do Madhesis want to be ruled by another Madhesi who are same as these pahade elites? If so, why to revolt and waste life of ordinary citizens? It should be noted, there were always Madheshis in Nepali politics, but who has emerged as a leader? I guess, None. Madehesh revolution united Madhesis, but alas, they are enslaved by Maoists and these party alliances. I wish they would speak different language than their fellows, and have an own opinion about Nepal. This strengthens my doubt of a New prosperous Nepal, and certainly forces me to believe that the new Nepal will be like another Iraq or Afghanistan. It is time not to be lead, but to lead, and to stop the blame on Monarchy; I know this being the easiest excuse to mislead the international organizations, is hard to give up, but at least try, I am sure Nepalese will find a way.

What can Gyanendra do for the Noble Cause?

What can Gyanendra do for the Noble Cause?

We all know the legacy of the institution of the monarchy – "glory to the monarchy and down to the people and their civil liberty and rights." That is why it is called feudal Hindu monarchy, of which principles are mythical and practice is oligarchic. It has ruled us for two and half century under the feudal oligarchic decree of the hierarchy of the Hindu caste system or racial social stratifications. It has obstructed by force people's civil liberty and rights and committed human rights violations for century.

How Gyanendra stepped in this institution as his fate could have been cooled off if he had not come-up with his ambitious grand design to revive the Dark Age legacy of the institution. Moreover, he cunningly grabbed the power and wealth of the institution and transferred to his and his family members' name. How much national resource he has recklessly blown out under his chairmanship to suppress people's movement he is solely accountable.

By no means in 21st century can Gyanendra force his mindset for the Dark Age legacy. The most responsible thing for him to do is to make public his warm acceptation of the declaration of secular state, his agreement with CA elections, his openness to live his life in equal term with people as a bona fide citizen, and his willingness to transfer all the property of the institution to the people of Nepal. After all, this is the fate. Therefore, it is better for him to have hope in democracy than in his Dark Age legacy. No astrologer on the face of the earth can change his destiny.

Those council of ministers of the chairman king and his administrators and security chiefs who were interrogated by the Rayamajhi commission against atrocities committed during April Uprising outright blamed Gyanendra. For every question the answer was the king responsible. For example, according to the former (then) army Chief PJ Thapa that he was not consulted for the February 1, 2005 coup. Even his own military secretary was ignored. CDOS, police, army and intelligent agencies were maneuvered in a Panchayeti fashion so that the order from above must be implemented against the will of the people. However, Rayamajhi commission's recommendations lenient with Gyanendra in coherent with his May 24, 2006 proclamation can by no means be taken as amnesty. But it has given a political passage for the nation to become republic.

Certainly, SPAM, the interim government and Interim Parliament have the legal obligation to bring those council of ministers to justice, who justified the coup and committed atrocities and rampant corruptions. Surely, Rayamajhi commission's recommendation for action against responsible council of ministers must not be procrastinated to uncertainty. Such action might help build the political morale for the CA elections.

Most significantly, if Gynandra can come out of his Dark Age mindset he can help the nation to carry out the CA elections successfully. This means he has to confess the fact that his 'fate' has taken u-tern. It has dragged him back to his professional destiny that he has inherited from his uncles and aunts – the entrepreneurship. The only difficulty with this fate in democracy is that it will have to comply with the rule of law. There is no more freeloading. Everyone must earn honestly under the rule of law.

That is why we need CA elections so that we can establish institutions of democracy to manage our everyday life under the rule of law. It is our nation's noble cause for peace and democracy. We the people of our nation have aspired for it so that we can live in a democratic nation that can guarantee our civil liberty and rights. Therefore, Gyanedra is predestined with his fate to this noble cause.

The only and final political hurdle for CA elections is the suspended institution of the monarchy. The nation is not going to back up from republic setup. The best thing for Gyanendra is to follow the heritage that he has originally inherited as his profession and make the best of it for his family to build a financial empire. In democracy under the rule of law after paying taxes with honest earning one can deserve public respect for his or her financial empire.

The interim government that crashed upon the feudal establishment had for sometime indigestion with the movements of Madhesi (MPRF) and indigenous nationalities (NFIN). The government now is making positive moves with NFIN and MPRF. This means the consensus for restructuring the state with the federal governance structure has become mandatory. Once the nation has federal governance structure with more than one states and local city and village governments then the possibility of any coup is next to impossible. By arresting the federal capital, for instance, the whole nation will not be captured because the states will have right to resist such coup or external invasion.

The fifth plenum of the Maoists has put forward the prerequisites for the CA elections – declaration of a republic and a proportional electoral system. If the SPAM could not agree to make such changes before CA elections the Maoists are about to announce peaceful revolt. Nation's political parties in majority are heading for the republic setup and for the federal governance structure.

Therefore, if Gyanendra as a suspended monarchy really supports permanent peace in the nation he can contribute significantly to achieve it. Such contribution can be historic. Moreover, all the conflicts that the nation is undergoing will cease. The Hindu fundamentalists' defense army will have nothing to fight. The rebels will have no monarchy to strike. Finally Gyanendra and his family will be home free. As bona fide citizens of the nation their civil liberty and rights will be protected. Gyanendra can successfully revive as a successful modern businessman. Nation is in need of many innovative entrepreneurs. This should not be the end but the beginning of the outstanding heritage of Gyanendra to his family and the nation.

Prakash Bom
August 11, 2007

Pointless Dispute on the Proportional Electoral Systems for CA Elections

Pointless Dispute on the Proportional Electoral Systems for CA Elections

Do we really understand proportional electoral systems? If we have then, why are we disputing over it in vain? I have raised this question in response to the logic of President of Nepali Congress Democratic Sher Bahadur Deuba who has claimed, "A proportional electoral system weakens the parties, strengthens the leaders and ruins people's aspirations." His accusations against the proportion election system contradict the principle and norm of the Proportional Representation Electoral System that has become the predominant voting system of the most advanced western democracies.

It is also doubtful what do the rest of the political leaderships talk about proportional representation voting and mixed representation voting systems? Perhaps they are talking about the same thing, which has very little difference. Yet politically they are engaged in 'much ado about nothing!' However, in a country that has multi-party and multi-ethnic representational constituencies proportional representation voting is the most scientific and logistically viable.

Proportional representation voting (PR) is the main rival to plurality-majority voting. The basic approach of proportional representation is that legislators are elected in multimember constituencies instead of single-member constituencies, and the number of seats that a party wins in an election is proportional to the amount of voters. For example, if we have a 10-member constituency and the NC win 40% of the vote, it secures four of the ten seats. If the UML win 30% of the vote, it gets three seats. If the Maoist gets 20% of the vote, it wins two seats and NCD gets 10% of the vote, if wins 1 seat. Multimember constituencies mean constituencies that have multi-number of representation seats.

Electoral system designers have devised several ways to achieve these proportional results. There are thus three basic kinds of PR: Party List Representation Voting, Mixed-Member Representation Voting, and Single-Transferable Voting or Choice Voting.

In Party List Representation Voting legislators are elected in large in multi-member constituencies. Each party puts up a list of candidates equal to the number of seats in the constituencies. Independent candidates may also run, and they are listed separately on the ballot as if they were their own party. On the ballot, voters indicate their preference for a particular party and the parties then receive seats in proportion to their share of the vote. So in a five-member constituency, if the NC wins 40% of the vote, it would win two of the five seats. The two winning NC candidates would be chosen according to their position on the list. Party list voting systems are by far the most common form of proportional representation.

In Mixed-Member Representation Voting legislators are elected with the combination of a single-member constituency system with a proportional voting system. Half of the members of the legislature are elected in single-member constituency plurality contests and the other half are elected by a party list representational vote. Both results are added on to the constituency members so that each party has its appropriate share of seats in the legislature. Basically, this voting system is combined into candidate based voting and party list voting with double ballots.
In Single-Transferable Voting or Choice Voting is known as the name "single transferable vote" implies, this systems involves a process of transferring votes. Instead of voting for one person, voters rank each candidate in their order of choice. So if the voters liked SB Deuba the best, they would mark the "1" after his name. If the voters liked Prachanda second best, they would mark "2" by his name, if the voters liked MK Nepal the third best, they would mark "3" by his name and so on. This voting system is based on voters' choice of "Excellent", "Best" and "Good" for individual candidates.
There are only two electoral systems for voting – Traditional Plurality-Majority Voting and Proportional Representation Voting. The Interim Constitution of Nepal 2006 has adopted MMPR or Mixed Member Proportional Representation Voting. MMPR is one of the electoral systems of the Proportional Electoral System. Therefore, President of NCD Sher Bahadur Deuba's accusation of the PR system that weakens the parties, strengthens the leaders and ruins people's aspirations cannot be validated against PR electoral system.

Similarly, the Maoists' original support for the Mixed-Member Proportional Representation (MMPR) electoral system verses current inclination to Proportional Electoral System makes no difference at all unless Maoists are now supporting Party List Proportional Representation (PLPR) electoral system. Likewise, UML leader MK. Nepal now abandoning his party's stand on proportional electoral system and sticking to 'Nepali Mixed Electoral System' has no electoral system validation. The "Nepali Mixed Electoral System" if not it is part of the Proportional Representation Electoral System then it is a Traditional Plurality-Majority Electoral System or just a misinterpreted electoral system that came out of the blue "kurai kurama".

What sort of electoral debate that current political scenario dictates between Proportional Electoral system and Nepali Mixed Electoral system resembles the situation of pack of self-confused dogs chasing their own tales! If there were a dispute on the Traditional Plurality-Majority Voting system and Proportional Representation Electoral Systems then that would make some sense. As matter of fact, there should be no dispute on MMPR and PLPR because both of them are the sub-system of the same electoral system of the modern democracy – Proportional Representation Electoral System.

It is a shame on those political party leaderships whose party has accepted the federal governance system and yet opposes proportional electoral system without understanding the electoral systems completely. If the delay in negotiating with NEFIN and MPRF is based on such futile differences then it is really unfortunate. It seems leaders and supporters of NEFIN and MPRF are most impressively self-arduous and less relying on others for authentic information than these established political party leaderships. Because of their inability, lack of knowledge and false values of their status quo Nepal is terribly lacking in political leaderships.

Prakash Bom
August 3, 2007

From the Perspective of Humanism and Democracy

Significance of Right to Self-determination of People of Nepal:
From the Perspective of Humanism and Democracy

It is very important for us - all Nepali people and particularly the political leaderships and headships of the civic community to understand the 'Humanism' and how it had influenced the democracy, and sustained its fundamentals to this modern time. Such an intellectual conception will help us have vision to achieve our dream to create a new democratic Nepal. There can be no willpower if there is no conception therefore there can be no way for our dream to come true. We must conceive from past and present on thing that is most pragmatically an existence, which surrounds us to be flourished if nurtured carefully.

It was in sixth century B.C.E. humanism was developed in ancient Greek. Humanist Anaxagoras, influenced the development of democracy, freedom of thought, and the exposure of superstitions. However humanism can also be traced back to the Warring Era of Confucious's time (551-479 B.C.E.). But, its western philosophies have widely influenced movement, particularly the secular humanism.

Humanism is a broad category of ethical philosophies. These philosophies establish dignity and worth of all humans based on their ability to determine right and wrong by universal human qualities of rationality. This means given the freedom and opportunity humans can think rationally. Humanism necessitates a commitment to the search for truth and ethics through human means in support of human interests. Humanism support human self-determination thereby rejects the validity of transcendental justifications, such as dependence on faith, the supernatural, or the divinely asserted texts such as Bible, Koran, Vedas or Puranas. Humanism endorses universal morality based on the commonality of human conditions. It insists that the solutions to human social and cultural problems cannot be supernatural or enchantments of the divine miracles.

From the perspective of the humanism and democracy Nepali people as humans have been prevented to have right to self-determination for centuries. They were caged and restricted from rational thinking not only by the two hundred and fifty years feudal oligarchic establishments but also by the caste system as social stratifications and people's dependence on faith and traditions of superstitions. Our political problems thus far for establishing democracy have been our own social and cultural regressions and stringencies that have failed to rationalize its solutions through genuine concern for democracy.

These facts have been pinpointed many times at our own mindsets that have been hindering political changes. These elements have been clearly identified as weakness not only of our political party leaderships, but also of ruling elites, legal experts and media managements. The headships of civil society of Nepal and leaders of ethnic movements have been calling it unfortunate. But many political party leaders, ruling elites and legal experts are used to put cap on these changes saying, "it is not possible in our society – 'how can we trust people who have no expertise?'" arbitrarily without even giving a benefit of doubt for human rationality. However, it is by getting opportunity people have expertise.

Still over fifty percent people's life for the resolutions of social and cultural problems is overruled by the faith, traditions of the superstitions, and the expectations of divine miracles. Therefore, there is no presence of the humanist school of thought to address social and cultural problems with human rationality. Those schools of thought such as Buddhism, which denied the existence of divine in its original arguments, have little influence even in its own cults in this time. Buddhism believes in void or none existence of self as descended from divine self. Therefore, the humans themselves with their own ability to self-determination must address the solutions of their social and cultural problems. But, if the right to self-determination to people are obstructed by hook and crook of the status quo (such mindsets) then "what should marginalized and deprived people do?" under such social and cultural stratifications. As a matter of fact, it is a question of universal morality from the point of view of humanism, and such obstructions might have been committed systematically as human rights violations against humanity.

Nepal is basically a feudal traditional society that has kept its majority of population illiterate still over fifty percent. Its traditional practice and values have Hindu superiority practically dominated by the hierarchical caste system of rituals, rites and animal sacrifices. It has one hundred and two castes and fifty-nine ethnic groups of people. Resolutions to social and cultural problems are sought through the hierarchical caste system with its rituals, rites and sacrifices. It is true to this time that majority of marginalized and deprived people (lower caste Hindu, ethnic group of people and women) have ever been caged with their mindsets and have never been literate.

It seems as if the so-called democratic political parties are caged similarly with their own mindsets. But the current political developments indicated that over fifty percent of people are awakened not to seek their social cultural problems through the status quo of tradition but through their own human rationality by getting involved in the politics of the nation. The ten years Maoist insurgency might have played a significant role in awakening people for or against the communist ideology.
But if people are changing their attitudes of dependence in traditional resolutions for their social and cultural problems then the seed of humanism have been sown. It is a hope that people are struggling to use their intrinsic human ability of rationality or power of thinking. Once people see the necessity they will invent their own valuable tool of human rationality.

Democracy of those so-called democratic political parties who stick to their feudal traditional status quo to obstruct the right to self-determination of people of Nepal will not succeed. If people do not have right to self-determination in their own constituencies then what for do their votes count? If their state or province (city or village) governments have no autonomy but are centrally controlled then where do people participate in nation building process? The resolutions to these issues can only come from a rational human mind that has vision to see brighter future in the light of socio-political pragmatism for real progress of humanity of Nepal.

It seems as if the so-called democratic political leaderships, ruling elites and law experts of Nepal have no perception of any school of thought of Humanism to respect universal morality. Nor it had been existed in last two hundred and fifty years of rule of feudal oligarchic and feudal democratic rules. The so-called only Hindu state of the world had no respect to its own ancestors' schools of thought most of which were religious humanist or educational humanist. For example, Nyaya philosophy advocates four sources of knowledge – perception, inference, comparison and testimony. Logic in Nyaya is a valid way to obtain knowledge to gain release from sufferings or social and cultural problems. Nyaya is a sort of educational humanist school of thought. However, the fundamental objective of all Vedic schools of thought is to liberate mankind from its ignorance. So, where were those rulers of past and where are the contemporary political party leaderships now?

People are moving nation rapidly towards political changes even though they may not have clear humanistic point of view for the methodology of getting resolutions for social and cultural problems. Social problems are mainly health, education and economics. But Nepal has a specific social problem of caste system as a social hierarchical stratification that determined social and economic status of a group of people, basically the problem created by the Hindu religion. A culture exists and grows because of its language, art and way of life and so on. The cultural problems exist if one religion based homogenous tradition politically prevents other to exist. This means it restricts minority people's civil liberty and rights from their daily life practice. What rationality does such restriction have? From humanist point of view none except for the vested self-interest of the groups of ruling elites. In Nepali scenario the groups of ruling elites are upper caste Hindus.

Democracy without the guarantee of civil liberty and right of all sovereign citizens of the nation will neither flourish nor get nurtured. Civil liberty and right of all sovereign people of Nepal cannot be established in a democracy that tries to tumble in a feudal oligarchic system of governance nor in a totalitarian or one party system of governance. The governance structure and its logistics that can guarantee the civil liberty and right of the sovereign citizens of Nepal is the federal system that has at least ternary tier of governments – federal (central), state and provincial (city or village) governments with their autonomy for self-governance. Right to self-determination is the liberty and right of the autonomous local governments that a democratic constitution must have provisions.

If the leaderships are still not capable of determining our choice for restructuring the state mechanisms with the most efficient system for democracy as responsible political party leaders then there is problem with their mindsets. They are philosophically empty enough to be corrupt with the lack of universal morality based on the commonality of human conditions. Democracy will not function with the party politics of power unless it is considerably restrained with some off limits. It will for sure drop dead without accountability to people. From humanist point of view republic setups, and federal government structures and mechanisms have become essential mandates of democracy in Nepal in which people can establish their dignity and worth of their human ability to determine right and wrong by universal human qualities of rationality.

Prakash Bom
July 10, 2007

Animal, Water, Health and Education Rights !

In my democratic opinion - the simple the democrative method is - the better impact it can make. In Nepal, I would like to propose these 4 basic rights that have never been talked about, diminished, given less priority and side lined by the cruel or you may say ignorant politicians.

Animal Rights:

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_BW-58uLk0k0/Rowbk4GbQUI/AAAAAAAAABk/gMQD-pVljCQ/s320/410_global_warming_Animal.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083468399743025474" />

Animal rights, also known as animal liberation, is the movement that will protect animals NOT allowed to be sacrificed in front of the temples or any public places ! Animals should not be treated or regarded as their property by humans and do whatever they want at their mercy. Animals shouldn't be treated like slaves and robots! It is a mundane and a radical culture in many parts of Nepal that animals are treated inhumanly. Not only that the animal sacrifice in the temples make human dis-respectful to the creatures that we share this earth with ! Forget about being in-sensitive to other humans who are against this violent act and treat their animal counter parts as their pets or friends. How to stay away from killing animals and avoid cruelty ?. Can we not protect their living rights?

It is the moral obligation of the community to preserve their ecological interest and do not allow any animals to be sacrificed in the temple that every devotees go for differnt reasons. An en-closed slaughter house could be an alternate so that vegetarian or pegan pilgrims may not have to witness this barbatic act ! The children below 13 should not be allowed/could be avoided to see such cruel sacrifice act no matter what culture they belong to !

Water Rights:

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_BW-58uLk0k0/Rowb-4GbQXI/AAAAAAAAAB8/WMfb2_cjIaI/s320/nepal_water.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083468846419624306" />

Enviromental awareness, rights are basic principles in any society. If there is no good air to breadth, no pure water to drink and healthy enviroment to embrace there is no need purpose meaning of any additional modern development. None will survive if these are not fixed first. Being one of the richest country in the water resources - all people living in Nepal should be given dringing water free of cost! That's my political agenda.

Health Rights:
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_BW-58uLk0k0/RowbzIGbQWI/AAAAAAAAAB0/Uvu-rqAiMPI/s320/Image24_Health.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083468644556161378" />

The right to health includes access to adequate health care (medical, preventative, and mental), nutrition, sanitation, and to clean water and air. It also includes occupational health injuries and diseases resulting from unhealthy and hazardous working conditions. The state of health depends on the person's genetic makeup, and is molded by environment and health interventions. The health cost can be minimized if the citizen know what their health rights are:

Availability
Public health care facilities must exist in sufficient quantity. At a minimum, this includes safe drinking water, adequate sanitation, hospitals and clinics, trained medical personnel receiving domestically competitive salaries, and essential drugs

Accessibility
Health care must be physically and economically affordable. It must be provided to all on a non-discriminatory basis. Information on how to obtain services must be freely available.

Acceptability
All health facilities must be respectful of medical ethics, and they must be culturally appropriate

Quality
Health facilities, goods, and services must be scientifically and medically appropriate and of good quality. At a minimum, this requires skilled medical personnel, scientifically approved and unexpired drugs and hospital equipment

Education:

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_BW-58uLk0k0/RowbsIGbQVI/AAAAAAAAABs/RFk6ykpPUuc/s320/edu03_Education.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083468524297077074" />

Information is education and synonym to the knowledge in this modern and digital age. Education is key to development. Children specially are the the future of humanity and they need to get education of their choice to enlighten the human potential. Telecenters, vocational trainings could be demanded and included in the political agendas in every villages.

LAW ENFORCEMENT & NEPAL -- An Example

For the first time in the history of Nepal, I see Law being enforced. I congratulate the District Administration Office and the Chief District Officer personally for taking this exceptional step – in a time – where the country is in chaos and anarchy. I am sure most of our journalists, human rights, and international civil society leaders will fail to honor this officer. I won’t be surprised; they did not find any fuel for their media.

This is the time when every citizen needs to advocate and support everyone who tries to enforce law. As the communism has already enslaved Nepal and International world supports those terrorists without carefully analyzing, only strict law enforcement officers can shape this nation. I invite everyone to support these patriots and join hands to fight against global terrorism.

I admire that UNMIN is taking steps to investigate into the destruction that happened in Bardiya. I can easily imagine the situation of a country where the Assistant District officer can be beaten by some hooligans who claim themselves to be of Young Communist League. Why civilians should suffer? Political organizations do not burn the electricity authority and land revenue offices. I hail the actions that the DAO Bardiya has taken. It should set an example for all the leaders and the political slaves who have negotiated with terrorists. Remember, we can negotiate with political groups, but not with with terrorists.

According to Nepalnews “The district administration of Bardiya has banned the show of arms as well as lathis (batons) in protests. The administration has issued an order banning carrying lathis, guns, sharp weapons and slings in protest demonstrations. The order was issued after Maoist activists started using them in demos terrifying the local people. Meanwhile, the police have filed cases under Public Offense law against 38 out of 46 YCL cadres it had arrested in connection with attack against government offices in Gulariya.”

Unfortunately, in Nepal, to fight with terrorists, the officers are scared because of human rights activists. No human rights watch groups comes to see the pain a civilian suffers, but when a terrorist is charged with criminal intent and terrorist behavior, all the civil society leaders will advocate. Imagine the pain of those 30,000 people who were brutally killed by these tyrant terrorists, and the bereaved family they have left behind. Which human rights watch group is taking care of their family, and see the dilemma; those terrorists are sheltered by the same human rights watch group.

Who is responsible for all the attacks that have happened in Banke, Bardiya and Dang districts? Nepalnews states “In Banke, Maoists had set fire to police post last week. In Bardiya, they attacked the post of Armed Police Force. In Dang they attacked a Congress leader even as talks were on between NC and Maoist leaders regarding return of properties of displaced persons.” Is the terrorist chief accepting the blame?

According to Katipur “The US embassy Tuesday warned its citizens to exercise caution before visiting Nepal citing continued Maoists "violence, extortion and abduction" even after their entry into the interim government. The embassy, has said that it is concerned about the security situation in Nepal and urged American citizens planning a visit to Nepal to obtain updated security information before they travel.”

There isn’t any logic to endanger someone’s life in Nepal. I appreciate America because it has foreseen how communism leads the path of terrorism. Seven dictators entered into a wrong agreement with a terrorist who dreams to the first communist president of the nation.

“Issuing a travel advisory on Monday the embassy urged its citizens who are presently in Nepal to be careful and not to leave their houses if there are demonstrations being held.”

I wonder why terrorism in Nepal is still supported. By far or less, only Nepalese are the one to be blamed for its deteriorating situation. Nepalese have the capability of end this war by themselves. It shouldn’t be forgotten – Nepalese are the brave sons of “Gurkhas”, and they are capable to end this terrorism and also can advance brotherhood.

I appeal to everyone to support these types of officers so that more officers can work like them. A small country like Nepal can be the “Zone of Peace” again overnight if few more like this CDO are born in Nepal.

A killer’s voyage to pilgrims!

“Sau chuhe kha ke billi chali haj karne” blaze of fire never produces chill as snow never prevents hypothermia. We fought for democracy in 2007 BS again till 46, even now. Few unsatisfied got wild, in the menu were about 13000 human lives, Anything or any theory if is justified enough to kill then for sure its outdated, besides if mandatory to behold below the horizon of human lives, the infrastructure and the graph declination this 10 years of Maoist insurgency plotted for human rights were all outstanding and worth at least 13000 mouth full of spits, (this would produce no salivary deficiency, I promise!). Prachanda places himself in the same row where Pol pot the great (no simple human could kill millions, its outstanding trait of outstanding people) is pre-established, I read an article by Dr Brian Metters, as “Hope comrade Gaddha soon recovers”.
Hope the best form of communist is to be practiced in Nepal that is and that has been just a failure on this earth. Comrade Gaddha is well organized both in personal to party issues and believes no other can handle state and leadership better than his own son his wife, his partner’s wife and all in the network of he and his (new preamble contributed by Prachanda in the holy book of communism, “theory of me and my”). I am afraid its nothing new in Nepal, nepotism has been a culture. We dint abolished it then, but now or further we even wont be able to speak against, may be we suffer exile or assassination as per their limited options to judge. This sort was well practiced in jungle since last 10 years (latest political news is rigidity of their profound culture to bully) ‘kukur ko puchhar!’ They are, is they were (not to commitment that lured mass to him before) and some of us dream a better world under his governance! Well, wonderful! go on, day dreaming is pleasing and proud of your optimism. Politics of Nepal needed a change everything was eaten up by the so called democratic parties. What type of change? Refreshment of people on the chair or the ethics on the chair, just for the shake of change, proving 5 to be greater than 10 is really an intelligent move! “Political blinds!”
Playing games, plotting on strategies with an answer of “who cares of people” as we are insects to their vested interests, diffusing propaganda as Stalin did. “Well, I am worried Baburam. It’s a warning and you too know how Comrade Gaddha (Prachanda) enjoyed putting u down before”. Baburam is not a big difference to Trotsky of USSR during Stalin if frame to frame comparison is done. Trotsky was a better human, intelligent, good speaker, more abide to principle of development and thoughtful in comparison to Stalin. After dethroning Czar Nicholas II he left no stones unturned defaming Trotsky except a few of the moments Stalin needed him. Ultimately Trotsky was assassinated in Mexico by few of Gundas (the secret police of Stalin). “Dude, be careful and sniff’ if Gaddha has already knitted a plan to widow your wife.”
My dear Pahadi (hill people) brothers and sisters, “Injustice any where is threat to everywhere.”

“Few armies came and took people around me, I did not care. They were neither on my principle nor of my community. Again a flock came and took a few of them, I did not care. Ahh.., they don’t belong to my family. Now they came and took away me; I struggled and wept. But there was no one around to Care.”

Beware before it is too late. A snake is a snake. It won’t inhibit stinging you when it needs even if it is your friend. “A snake fed on milk is no different in venom to a wild snake”, basic animal behavior. Such snakes making parliament their holes confiscated of rats (the SPA, seven party alliances). Just think they are the cause for 13000 deaths, “count zeros well and imagine.” Ask those who they made widow, who confiscated a son from his mother, who made a generaration deprived of education, who made civilian and children their armor, for whom humanity stands null, ask them who witnessed their brutality, no respect to people even after death, chopping down head. Country spoke no words on their alliance with SPA and such a huge influence of them in Nepali politics. See, the king is gone, though let us throw him even farther to prevent his exhale pollute the land of Gautam Buddha. For this we don’t need those brutal ‘Gundas’(Maoists) to cooperate, who might or might have helped us get a demon (King) out but is a demon of greater magnitude and is adding its devil character geometrically with time. Well may be some of us or most of us turn deaf ears with a superstition as communal or religious rite.
This revolution is to victory as soon as possible or as later as possible. We are and will be fighting for this, my children will fight and even their children. I won’t get violent, I am sure. But hate as transferred from a generation to other is hundreds of times multiplied. I can’t assure the future would too prohibit itself within premises of non-violence. Worried and concerned to see my land Nepal enjoying eternal peace before I exhale last.

<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); As everyone knows, there is no base of democracy of Nepal, we can say, yes! Dictators and Terrorists have once again raped “democracy”, in the name of democracy, and for the “right of people”. April movement was done forcefully; referendum, constituent assembly elections, and all those wish of “Nepalese people”, doubts me – Do the people of Nepal know what constituent assembly is?, a republican setup, the power of a president, communism --- even one percent? I am sure not.

Often I see “Wish of Nepalese people”, shocked I am, leaders talking about Nepal. “People and people’s wish” has been misused that we Nepalese standstill lost somewhere. People benefiting, of course, are the media person – easy source of news. Fuel on fire is easy to burn….no special coverage. And, the octogenarian, who should be in temple at this age, declares Nepal secular because he entered into wrong agreement with Maoists for his position of politics.

Let us all see and watch, how will Nepal collapse and compare with Afghanistan or Iraq. Again, media will benefit with “free news”, and dictators and Maoists of Nepal will get fund and international support to fight for democracy…. And let’s see how long lasting will that democracy be…it’s the time to redefine democracy—maybe it coincides with terrorism for Nepal.

www.nepalmadhesh.blogspot.com

Why Nepal Failed? An Appeal To Citizens

Inability of Election Commission to do the polls on time was inevitable. As Sujatha Koirala said, she would not cast her vote with gun on her head. Prachanda, the comedian of the millennium, advocates to criminalize MRPF, whereas, he is not willing to leave his gun.

Failing to satisfy everyone will lead Nepal in a state of anarchy. I am surprised by International World and the so called social activist. I was aware that social activists are the creator of chaos in the society, but I was not aware, they will even politically fail. These civil society leaders who are sheltered by corrupt politicians and Maoists advocate for peace. It made me laugh. International media and organizations helped fuel the fire of Nepal’s political process, and surprisingly, they are relying on the word of Maoists. Nepal, between a failed state of India and Communist Nation of China, failed to adapt the policy of developed nation and landed into anarchy.

India, who helped and backed up Maoists to fight against Nepal government, have started to face the consequences they supported. Many states are already occupied by the Maoists and in the long run, it will be adversely affected. Any nation, supporting violence fail to foresee that communism is a communicable disease, and as such, India is affected now. A country that was divided into pieces because of the religion, wishes to help Nepal, by backing up Maoists activities.

What a dilemma!

I advise the impotent government of Nepal some under listed things:

If the revolting group can be satisfied by the resignation of an alleged killer and giving constituencies, there shouldn’t be any question about it. The pahade government dishonored Madhesis by appointing the alleged killer as the Home Minster again. Whereas the jurisdiction of Nepal Government is solely concentrated at the Prime Minister’s office, we believe that the Courts should have the authority for Judicial Review. It is important because powerless Court means powerless law. In this way, the power can be balanced. Number of terms for any Governmental position should be fixed. For instance, if a person is appointed (not elected) six times by six people as a Prime Minister for Nepal, young and potential leaders will not get a chance to evolve. Successors follow the precedent and in case of Nepal, precedent set by the evil civil war is on the way to lead to an ethnical war. It should be noted, political wars may end, but an ethnical war is unavoidable and it will affect everyone tremendously. Eight party alliances have set monopoly to rule Nepal. Clearly, getting appointed for unlimited terms and evolution of no new leaders is the result of monopoly. Government created by unconstitutional way, is itself unconstitutional. Noticeably, Nepal has not been able to hold elections for more than eight years; is the government elected body who can decide about the people’s choice including the issue of monarchy? Maoist chairman has attracted United States and United Nations with pack of lies. Without having evidences, alleging anyone with a national threat, is certainly not authorized by the exercise of free speech. Is the international world still relying on his words? The biggest question today is “Are we ready to witness another unending ethnical war?”

Most importantly, I am surprised, why the big nations, are watching this drama. They are capable to end this drama and provide peace to this nation of 26 million populations who will thank them forever.

www.shrivastav.wordpress.com
www.myspace.com/ashutoshshrivastav

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ndforum.blogspot.com/2007/04/why-nepal-failed-appeal-to-citizens.html' title='Why Nepal Failed? Post-birth processes of educating a child that vary according to local communities, sexual orientations, traditions etc shape the once “default” human being into a character that inclusively defines societal values and beliefs.

Aristotle was a 4th century BC Greek citizen who boasted a lavish lifestyle as made possible by the manual labor of slaves and the wives at home. The sufficient material needs is what exactly made it possible for him and his contemporaries to exchange philosophical views. A principal Aristotelian ethics is the ethics of virtue. Aristotle was convinced that the best life is the happy life, and we do have a public consensus about that. But the problem lies when we have to define what “happiness” is. According to Aristotle, the virtuous life is the happy life.

“Virtue” is an acquired human quality the possession and exercise of which tends to enable us to achieve those goods which are internal to practices and the lack of which effectively prevents us from achieving any such goods. A very profound analogy by Aristotle is that human beings are archers continuously shooting arrows in the form of actions. Virtuous actions being the mean between two extremes, the vice of deficiency and the vice of extreme.

Doing the right thing, at the right time, with right reasons, in right ways to right people is what is virtuous. This practice makes a human being “happy” according to Aristotle. This theory sounds very inviting to accept because it is easy to bring a public consensus about it, leading to living a happy life and thus being happy. Nevertheless, this theory has its own flaws. Is it practically possible to be exclusively virtuous in today’s society? I am inclined to argue against it because if Aristotle himself lived in a society where he supported slavery and sexist views, how could he have possibly been living a “virtuous” life. He has even shown awareness about the fact that women and slaves were “incapable” because they weren’t given an opportunity to be educated, yet he believed firmly that given the same, they would be just as good intellects as himself.

Had Aristotle been so convinced that it’s the “virtuous” life that makes one happy, he would’ve actually practiced a truly virtuous life by emancipating his slaves and wife because he knew that that was the right thing to do. According to the different types of Aristotelian virtues that have been laid down, Aristotle fails to perform the virtue of courage, virtue of justice, virtue of generosity, virtue of greatness of soul and one might even name more. This makes me question if virtue is in fact the actual mode towards happiness.

Aristotelian ethics of virtue is based on his belief that every science and every investigation, and likewise every practical pursuit and undertaking, appears to aim at some good. This theory basically assumes that the “default” human nature is “good” and that’s why all conducts are aimed at some good। But I believe this is a big mistake to just “assume” that the human nature is good and thus propose a mode of living. Aristotle himself acknowledges that a young infant basically knows nothing. How can he then argue that an infant’s actions are aimed at some good?

Lets say, for the time being, that Human nature in fact was good and all actions were indeed aimed at some good. Why then not all human beings’ actions end at good? How are the actions that do not end at good justified? Obviously there are flaws in the proposition made by Aristotle.

Aristotle proposes that “good” is the “end” of action. This literally means that every action originates from a “bad,” thus heading towards the other extreme. It would be public consensus today that human beings want to know they are happy as they live. Aristotle says happiness requires a lifetime and one cannot declare exclusively a “happy life,” until death occurs. This would mean that life is a continuous test of a person’s ability to perform good, virtuous deeds until death.

If noted very carefully, Aristotelian ethics only applies to people who are lucky enough to be free masters and males. Thus rises the term conservative. Had his views been of a liberal nature, the conservative term of today would actually be liberal in meaning. It is sickening in today’s society to even be studying someone who thought of a woman as a “deformity, though one which occurs in the ordinary course of nature,” and their very existence is due only to the need for men to be reproduced sexually.

Various philosophers have agreed that Aristotelian ethics have flaws on the outside, but the core of his ethics can be applied even today and are transcultural. I do not see how that can be verified. How can a woman or an African American pursue Aristotelian ethics and be happy? It might be true that some of the ideology do apply to various cultures, but the fact that we know how he personally felt about woman and slaves makes it emotionally difficult for anyone oppressed to even read his views, let alone practice them and seek happiness. It is analogous to saying I do not want any advice about correcting my marriage from a person that has been through seven divorces. Even though she (the counselor) has some positive things to say, I still do not want to listen to her just because I question her credibility in the first place. In the same way I believe Aristotle is not credible enough for today’s contemporary society, where changes are unavoidable on a daily basis.

Aristotle tells us that the moral “good” has been defined through a process called “tradition” and that it is best to adhere to the tradition and be content thinking we are morally healthy. But how can this be true when the world now is virtually more like a different planet since the time those traditions were started and the moral “goods” were defined. Traditions have a life span. What we start today will turn out to be the tradition for the near future generation. What we teach our children today will be of traditional value to them.

The act of sharing intellectual knowledge and the ability of aggressive questioning our peers should be the most important thing we should learn from Aristotle. To gather practical experience of the affairs of life, which supply the premises and form the subjects of political theory should be the principal goal of today.

This will enable us (the terai people, the true NEPALI people) to find our own solutions to the problems of the modern society that takes into consideration all human beings, and their liberty without infringing upon the same of others.

Rules Of The Game

Any three existing members may invite a new member.

Free speech.

Non-members may participate in the comments sections.
